Games Are Addictive
This, we already knew. That never stopped scientists from proving something anyway though. (from Blue)

“Get me a girlfriend, win mass gold.” This is precisely the kind of guy that gives gamers a bad name. Let’s just say he goes well beyond failing to sell himself to the fairer sex. I’m not sure whether to laugh, cringe or cry.
How on earth did they do this? Gorillaz (yes, the “virtual band” from Damon of Blur) Live at the MTV Europe Music Awards. 3D animated and projected - I bet even the chord playing is accurate, the drumming certainly looks it. Astonishingly impressive. (via I’m A Human In Box which incidentally just passed 1000 posts - the guy is a machine).
I really hope this news piece wasn’t setup by THQ PR, I’m sure I don’t have to explain why. It wouldn’t be the first time someone in the games industry sought to cash in on death though. Anyone remember this press release from Noble PR promoting Rock Manager?
So today you probably heard about the untimely death of the drummer of rock group Feeder… It’s no surprise that the recent rock suicides serve as an ironic twist leading up to the much hyped computer game release entitled Rock Manager.
You simply couldn’t get any more tasteless or thoughtless.
Great idea for a themed site takeover. Usually they just stick themed graphics all over it, most memorably the horrid “McIGN” skin IGN once ran.
We in the UK miss out on three extra games the US gets at launch - Ridge Racer 6, NHL 2K6 and NBA 2K6, so nothing overly upsetting for most. Fifteen is a pretty hefty number of games at launch if you ask me.
I was lucky enough to play a bunch of 360 games at i26 recently. The PGR 3 motion blur is butter smooth and it’s just a lot of fun as per usual, very nicely presented. If it is running at 1024×600 I really couldn’t tell. Perfect Dark Zero displayed some superb animation but I thought the controls felt horrid and the gameplay deeply generic.
Kameo, also from Rare, was utterly gorgeous (possibly the best looking of the lot) and a lot of fun. Instead of just relying on shader effects the model detail and artwork is fabulous. I saw nothing to change my opinion that the Activision launch games (THAW, COD2, GUN) are all quick ports, which is a real shame. Dead or Alive 4… same old game with some extra detail and characters, but then why fix what ain’t broke.
An interesting idea for a piece from Gamasutra though it’s let down by the general lack of recognisable names or companies to be honest.
Also, I noticed that Glen Dahlgren’s game (the underated but not amazing Wheel of Time) is one he designed while at Legend. I’m sure he’s got an axe to grind but sneaking it into a list like this seems kind of cheap to me.
Yes, as in Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat. It’s every bit as fabulous as the premise promises. Use the menu to skip the first chapter if you want to move straight onto the fantastically constructed fight scene.
I’ll be away on a work thing until Monday. Be good now.
Heavy on the technical detail, though most of it’s still interesting if you can only barely grasp it. Failing that, gaze upon the stunning first screenshot from the next 3D Mark. Seems they’re doing some variety of subsurface scattering with pixel shaders (amongst other advanced rendering techniques). Impressive stuff. (via ShackNews)
That’s not the fun bit though. Check out Vint Cerf’s number plate. Who said geeks were humourless?

The art style of Penny Arcade sure has improved over the years. Perseverance pays off.
