Lucas Arts and Natural Motion

Finally a games company has announced that they’re using this very cool technology. The demo IGN describes involves characters falling down a sort of pit with planks sticking out while trying to grab on and stop their fall. In real time. There are presumably other applications here - models flinching naturally from being shot anywhere on their body, models flailing while being blown back by an explosion and so on.

Cool - looks like another nail in the coffin for rotoscoping and all that nonsense with ping pong balls attached to lycra bodysuits!

It sometimes surprises me how much effort goes into the best way to model the death of a character. If only we saw a return to lemmings style games where you can think of creative ways to cause character death :)

    Sorry maybe I’m being a little evil…

It’s not just for death - for instance, one demo showed an american football moment where the guy gets tackled and falls to the floor naturally while grasping the ball. Check it out in motion on the site, it’s very impressive stuff and it’s great they’re doing this stuff in real time now.
